Gas Line Testing & Permits

City and municipal codes have specific requirements for re-establishing gas service to a property

If a gas service has been discontinued and has been plugged, tagged, or pulled by a municipality then a gas test must be performed (may not apply if a current homeowner has a non-payment issue). Gas service will not be restored by the municipality until a gas test has been completed. When a gas test is required, the gas system of the residence (the piping and appliances) must be tested by a licensed plumber to determine if a leak(s) exists.

Testing for leaks is done by valving off the system, installing a special calibrated gauge and applying air pressure to test the system for leakage then monitoring that pressure for at least 15 minutes. In order to perform a gas test, a permit is required by the municipality in which the residence is located. All gas appliances and outlets at the residence must be inspected to verify that they comply with the municipalities’ codes. If leakage is detected in the gas system, the next step is to locate the leak(s) and make the appropriate repairs. The locating of the leak(s) and the determining the necessary repairs will be performed on a time and material basis.

Haley Plumbing will quote you up-front to make the repairs. Once all the repairs and code issues have been addressed, we will contact the municipality and schedule an inspection. The inspection can occur up to 48 hours after the municipality is contacted. Following the successful inspection by the municipality, they will contact the gas operator (e.g. CenterPoint Energy) to re-install the gas meter, if it had been previously removed, and activate gas service to the residence. This next step can occur up to 24 hours after the gas purveyor has been contacted.

During this entire process, Haley Plumbing will prepare a daily service ticket to document work performed.
